Adml Jervis From the original Picture in the Collection of Adm. Barrington
An oval bust-length portrait of John Jervis, Earl of St Vincent (1752–1820), in admiral’s full-dress uniform, 1787–1795, with added epaulettes and non-regulation cuffs, resting his chin on his thumb. Lettered beneath the image with the title, ‘Adml. Jervis From the original Picture in the Collection of Adml. Barrington.’ Also lettered around the bottom of the portrait with the production details, ‘Gardner pinxt. / Orme Junr. sculpt.’, and at the bottom of the print with the publication line, ‘London. Published as the Act directs 1 Augst. 1797.’ This portrait was engraved by Daniel Orme from a pastel portrait by Daniel Gardner, which was owned at the time the print was made by Admiral Samuel Barrington. The print was published by Orme on 1 August 1797. St Vincent was a prominent public figure in Britain at the time, having recently commanded the victorious British fleet at the Battle of Cape St Vincent on 14 February 1797. (Updated June 2019.)
