Sir John Jervis. K.B. Vice Admiral of the White &c. Engraved by Ridley from a Picture in the possession of Mrs Ricketts. Published for the Proprietors of the Monthly Mirror
oval half-length portrait of John Jervis, Earl of St Vincent (1752–1820) in flag officer’s full-dress uniform, 1787–1795, with the ribbon and star of the Order of the Bath, his left arm outstretched. The portrait is set in an octagonal frame. Lettered beneath the image with the title, ‘Sir John Jervis, K.B. Vice Admiral of the White &c.’ Also lettered with the production detail and publication line, ‘Engraved by Ridley from a Picture in the possession of Mrs Ricketts. / Publish’d for the Proprietors of the Monthly Mirror. April 1, 1797 by T. Bellamy King Street Covent Garden, London.’ This print was published by T. Bellamy as an illustration in ‘The Monthly Mirror’, volume 3 (January–June 1797), opposite page 131, alongside a biography of the sitter (pp. 131–136). The portrait is after an oil painting by Gilbert Stuart, which was owned at the time of engraving by the sitter’s sister, Mary Ricketts (née Jervis). (Updated 2019).
