Captn. Sir Edward Berry, of the Vanguard, Engraved by Ridley from an Original Miniature by Grimaldi
Print, from the 'European Magazine'. Berry was Nelson's flag-captain in the 'Vanguard' at the Battle of the Nile, 1 August 1798. He was promoted to post-captain in March 1797 and this image shows only the right epaulette of the 1795-1812 captain's full-dress uniform (only the right one being worn by captains of under three years' seniority). It lacks the Nile captain's medal though another earlier print from a Grimaldi miniature, but this time showing him in the captain's undress uniform, includes it (see PAD3438). Grimaldi exhibited a miniature of Berry at the Royal Academy in 1799, but his own list of his works only includes one version of it, not two, though he did another of Berry in 1828. See also Notebook field for Grimaldi notes and MNT0126. [PvdM 12/10]
