Planisphere

Planisphere. Celestial planisphere made of several layers of strong card. In the centre is a depiction of the northern constellations on a circular revolving card. The background is cream and the constellations, shown as mythological figures, are coloured. The two pieces of tape for moving this part have come away. Over the centre is a revolving cutaway card plate showing the points of the compass with an index arm which poits to the time of day or night on an outer scale. Rest of face of planisphere is cream coloured card printed with a spandrel design in each corner. Edge of planisphere bound with black passe partout, Parts held together with a copper rivet. On the reverse is writing including a short passage about the planisphere. The rest is instructions on how to use it to solve various problems. Paper seems to have yellowed with age. In mainly good condition, but the binding has come away in places.
The projection is geocentric and equidistant from the North Pole to South 40 degrees. There is a magnitude table above the horizon, which is labelled 'MAGNITUDES [1-5]'. The stars are marked by the Bayer notation. The Milky Way is labelled 'MILKY WAY'. 64 stars and seven star groups are named. Ptolemaic constellations above declination South 40 degrees and fourteen non-Ptolemaic constellations are drawn as well as eight of Hevelius.
