Gaspard de Coligny (1519-72), Odet de Coligny (1517-71) and Francois de Coligny (1521-69) by Marc du Val. The three brothers were born into a prominent French aristocratic family and their education was permeated by Humanist principles.
François de Coligny was one of the key figures of Calvinism in France and one of its more zealous defenders.
Gaspard de Coligny was made Admiral in 1552. An eminent Huguenot leader, he was assassinated on 24 August 1772 during St. Bartholomew's Day massacre.
Odet de Coligny was the Archbishop of Toulouse, Bishop of Beauvais and Pair de France. He was named Cardinal en 1533. He converted to Calvinism in 1561 and was subsequently excommunicated. He died in exile in England in 1570 and he his buried in Canterbury Cathedral.
