Armillary sphere
Armillary sphere. Scrolled stand on moulded base with foliate decoration. Compass set in the base with the initials of four winds. Plumb chain hangs directly above this. Four arms supporting the horizon ring divided 0-90 (four times).
The primary sphere consists of eight gilt brass rings. In the centre there is a small gilt brass sphere, representing the Earth. The abbreviation symbol used on the sphere for the Latin ending 'VM' in 'AEQVINOCTIOR(VM)' looks like a '7' drawn through the 'R'. For further information about the cartography and construction of this armillary sphere please refer to the related publication, Globes at Greenwich.
