Horatio Nelson mortally wounded at the Battle of Trafalgar

Printed in red ink. A naïve print showing Nelson mortally wounded at the Battle of Trafalgar. He lies on the deck of the ‘Victory’, surrounded by his fellow officers. Captain Hardy kneels on his left and holds Nelson’s right hand. This, however, is an error, since Nelson actually lost his right arm. Other officers and sailors look on amid the smoke of battle. The word ‘Victory’ is inscribed on the side of the ship. This simplistic image effectively conveys the story of the fatal wounding of Nelson and was one of many cheaply reproduced, in great numbers, for a mass market.
