Christopher Columbus (?)
Print. The title of Duke of Veragua (in Panama) was created in 1537 by the Emperor Charles V for Luis Colon de Toledo, the grandson of Christopher Columbus. It is currently held (from 1986) by Cristobal Colon, the 17th Duke, though only as a title since 1560 when the territory itself became a province of Panama. The 5th, 6th and 7th Dukes (1636-1733) and the 12th Duke (1821-66) were all baptised Pedro and the only ones with P as an initial. Which of them was artistic and drew the image on which this print is based is not known, though the style suggests the last. Its identity as their ancestor, Columbus, is the most likely possibility but requires confirmation.
