The Honorable Saml Barrington Admiral of the Blue
An oval half-length portrait to left of Samuel Barrington (1729–1800) in admiral’s undress uniform, 1787–1795. Lettered beneath the image with the title and the coat of arms of the Duke of Clarence (later William IV): ‘The Honorable Saml. Barrington. Admiral of the Blue.’ Also lettered with the production details: ‘Painted by Ph. Jean. / Engraved by J. Collyer.’ This portrait was engraved by Joseph Collyer after a miniature by Philippe Jean, which was itself based on an oil painting by Gilbert Stuart. The prime version of Stuart’s portrait was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1785. A subsequent version, signed and dated 1786, is now at Saltram. Barrington wears vice-admiral’s uniform in Stuart’s portrait but, in this print, he appears in admiral’s uniform, reflecting his promotion to admiral of the blue in 1787. Jean published this print on 1 March 1790 with a dedication to the Duke of Clarence (the future William IV), whose coat of arms were incorporated into the title of the print. This impression has been cut down, removing the publication line and the dedication, although the coat of arms remains. For an intact impression, see PAD4662. (Updated May 2019.)
