E. Hawke. Engraved for the Naval & Military Almanac 1840
A bust-length portrait of Edward Hawke (1705–1781) in flag officer’s full-dress uniform, 1767–1783, with the ribbon and star of the Order of the Bath. Lettered beneath the image with a facsimile of the sitter’s signature and the publication details, ‘Sir J. Reynolds R.A. / W. Jackman. / Engraved for the Naval & Military Almanac, 1840.’ This portrait was engraved by W. Jackman for E. H. Maxwell (ed.), ‘The Naval and Military Almanac’ (London: A. H. Baily & Co., 1840), January, opposite page 6, where it appeared alongside a biography of the sitter. The print caption mistakenly starts that the portrait is after Sir Joshua Reynolds. In fact, it is based on Francis Cotes’s three-quarter-length portrait of the late 1760s (see BHC2754), a version of which was engraved by John Hall in 1793 (see PAF3450). (Updated April 2019.)
