The Rt Honble Samuel Lord Hood. Admiral of the Blue. Engraved by Rivers from an Original Picture by J. Northcote Esqr R A
An oval bust-length portrait of Samuel Hood (1724–1816) in flag officer’s full-dress uniform, 1787–95, and a wig. Lettered beneath the image with the title, ‘The Rt. Honble. Samuel Lord Hood. Admiral of the Blue’. Also lettered with the publication details: ‘European Magazine / Engraved by Rivers from an Original Picture by J. Northcote Esqr. R.A. / Published by J. Sewell No.32 Cornhill Decr. 1st 1795.’ This portrait was engraved by ‘Rivers’ after an original painting by James Northcote – possibly the three-quarter-length exhibited by Northcote at the Royal Academy in 1784 and engraved by Henry Kingsbury in the same year (see PAG9334) or, more probably, the half-length painted by Northcote around the same time and now in the collection of the National Maritime Museum (see BHC2774). The uniform has been updated in this print to match the 1787–95 pattern, perhaps following Franz Gabriel Fiessinger’s stipple of 1793 (see PAD4676). This print was published by John Sewell as an illustration in ‘The European Magazine, and London Review’, volume 35, January 1799, opposite page, together with a biographical account of Hood’s life and career (pp. 3–4). (Updated May 2019.)
