John Hunter. From a Picture by Sir Joshua Reynolds in the Royal College of Surgeons. London

A half-length portrait of John Hunter (1728–93), resting his chin on his left hand and holding a quill in his right. He leans on a table, on top of which is an anatomy book open to a page illustrating the bones of the human forearm and hand. Lettered beneath the image with the title: ‘John Hunter. From a Picture by Sir Joshua Reynolds in the Royal College of Surgeons, London’. Also lettered with the production details and publication line: ‘Engraved by W. Holl. / London Published by Charles Knight & Co. Ludgate Street’. This print was engraved by William Holl and published by Charles Knight after an original painting by Joshua Reynolds in the collection of the Royal College of Surgeons. It was published by Charles Knight in ‘The Gallery of Portraits, with Memoirs’, volume 3 (1834), page 19, together with a biographical account of Hunter’s life (pp. 19–24). John Hunter was an eminent physiologist and surgeon. In his early career, he assisted his brother William Hunter in the latter’s anatomical demonstrations, before training as a surgeon and serving with the army in Portugal in 1762. Returning to London in 1763, he continued his surgical career. Over the next thirty years he occupied a number of important offices, including those of surgeon-extraordinary to the king and surgeon-general of the army. (Updated April 2019.)
