The Honble Charles Brown Esqr who Commanded in ye Second Post, at the Takeing Porto-Bello, on the 21st of Novr 1739 by Vice Admiral Vernon and led the Attack in His Majties ship the Hampton Court
Print. This relates to the oil portrait of Brown (BHC2578) presented to the Naval Gallery at Greenwich by his great-grandson, Edward Hawke Locker, to mark the centenary of the capture of Puerto Bello in 1739, where Brown led the attack on the Iron Castle. It is, however, a much more rugged representation of him with the castle at a larger background scale and the hanger (short sword) Brown is holding much more convincingly authentic in form. This suggests it may be the source for the oil, done in the later 18th century, rather than a print taken from it, especially since only Faber is named on it as the artist/ engraver. [PvdM 3/19]
