The Honorable Saml Barrington Admiral of the Blue. Dedicated by permission to his Royal Highness The Duke of Clarence, By his Royal Highnesses most obedient & devoted Servt Ph. Jean
A hand-coloured oval half-length portrait to left of Samuel Barrington (1729–1800) in admiral’s undress uniform, 1787–1795. Lettered beneath the image with the title and a dedication to the Duke of Clarence (later William IV) with the Duke’s coat of arms: ‘The Honorable Saml. Barrington. Admiral of the Blue. Dedicated by permission to his Royal Highness the Duke of Clarence, By his Royal Highnesses most obedient & devoted Servt. Ph. Jean.’ Also lettered with the production details and publication line: ‘Painted by Ph. Jean. / Engraved by J. Collyer. / London Pubd March 1. 1790 by P. Jean No. 10 Hanover Street Hanover Square.’ This portrait was engraved by Joseph Collyer after a miniature by Philippe Jean, who published the print in March 1790. Jean’s miniature was itself based on an oil painting by Gilbert Stuart. The prime version of Stuart’s portrait was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1785. A subsequent version, signed and dated 1786, is now at Saltram. Barrington wears vice-admiral’s uniform in Stuart’s portrait but, in this print, he appears in admiral’s uniform, reflecting his promotion to admiral of the blue in 1787. (Updated May 2019.)
