Earl St Vincent
State before letters. A half-length portrait of John Jervis, Earl of St Vincent (1752–1820) as an old man in a dark coat with the star of the Order of the Bath and a large hat. This portrait was engraved on steel by Charles Turner after a painting by Casimir Carbonnier. The print was published by Turner himself on 6 December 1822 and featured as the frontispiece to the first volume of Edward Pelham Brenton’s ‘The Naval History of Great Britain, from the Year MDCCLXXXIII to MDCCCXXXVI’ (London: C. Rice, 1823–5). For a lettered impression, see PAD3371. (Updated June 2019.)
