A Representation of the Engagement between his Majesty's Ship the Monmouth Capt. Gardiner, & the Foudroyant a French Man of War, on ye 28th of Febry 1758.
This representation of the engagement between ‘Monmouth’ and ‘Foudroyant’ that closed out the Battle of Cartagena on 28 February 1758 was produced for inclusion in the Gentleman's Magazine, April 1760 (v.30, inserted before p.164), where it is stated to be a copy of a print published by Richard Paton after his own painting of the action. Presumably this refers to the engraving by Canot after Paton’s oil that also depicts the other British ships involved (see PAH7694 for a fuller description), whereas Cole’s image crops its source so as to focus exclusively on ‘Monmouth’ and ‘Foudroyant’, which completely fill the picture. The Magazine printed an apology to Paton on the contents page of the subsequent issue for its “imperfect copy” having “invaded the property of another” (the remark therein that the original print was “published about two years ago” is assumed to be inaccurate: PAH7694 is dated 14 Feb 1759, and nothing issued earlier has so far been found).
As in Paton’s prime version, the ‘Foudroyant’ is shown on the left of the picture.
