The passenger/cargo liner Tainui (1884)

A 12x10 negative. A slightly distant port very near broadside view, taken from only just abaft the beam, of the passenger/cargo liner Tainui (1884) at anchor in Gravesend Reach, River Thames. She has three yards on her foremast and awnings are rigged amidships where the forward lifeboat and davits have been removed. The lifeboats abreast the funnels are swung out. The passenger ferry Earl of Essex (1877) is alongside aft. Tilbury is in the background. The original negative has been broken and discarded but a 12x10 photographic print was made in the 1950s before the negative was damaged and is available for scanning. A whole plate copy negative number G2050 produced by Gould is also available.
