Sultan (1873)
A whole plate negative. A slightly distant starboard side view, taken from well ahead of the beam, of the passenger/cargo liner Sultan (1873) at moorings in Gravesend Reach, River Thames. She has a 3 masted rig with two yards on the foremast and she is flying the blue peter and her houseflag. Tilbury railway station and ferry pontoon is in the background. In the early 1950s this negative was sent to the Admiralty at Bath who produced a 12x10 reversed photographic print but the negative was badly broken on the return transit and was discarded. The print is available for scanning but a whole plate copy negative numbered G1534 has already been made from this print. Negatives numbers G1316, G1534 and G2331 were taken on the same occasion.
