A group photograph of some of the officers from the light cruiser HMS Aurora (1913) with their wives having a picnic on board a derelict 44 ton spritsail barge with the Official Number 78976. The photograph was taken from aft of the main hatch looking forward towards the bow and windlass gear. The group are sitting between the main hatch and the mast tabernacle on the port side. The group includes Fleet Surgeon William Bastian (looking into camera), RN Clark Richard Wallace (looking towards Bastian) with Engineer Commander Alfred Cock sitting behind Wallace.
William Bastian was promoted to Fleet Surgeon in September 1916 and left Aurora by 22 September. The rings on his cuff show that he has been promoted from Staff Surgeon.
