The 2 masted steam yacht Hope at Gravesend in 1879

A whole plate negative. A slightly distant port side view, taken from well ahead of the beam, of a small 2 masted, single funnelled steam yacht at moorings in Gravesend Reach, River Thames. The yacht has a clipper bow, spike bowsprit and a counter stern and the hull is painted white. A bearded man in jacket and peaked cap is standing at the boat's wheel ahead of the deckhouse and foremast. The boat has two deckhouses, one either side of the thin raking funnel, and a pole mast is on each deckhouse. The forward deckhouse has barred windows at the forward end and wooden louvres in the aft openings and on the coach house roof. The aft deckhouse has curtained windows. There is no canvas on either mast. Two wooden barrels are on the stern of the boat. Hope and 16/8/79 are scratched in the emulsion and it is assumed that Hope is the name of the yacht. No yacht of this name can be found in the 1879/1880 Lloyd's Register of Yachts. A larger, black hulled, two masted, single funnelled schooner rigged yacht is on the right and spritsail barges, including a stackie barge, are at anchor close to the Tilbury shore in the background.
