Lusitania (1871)
A quarter plate negative. A montage showing, in the centre, a port broadside view of the passenger/cargo liner Lusitania (1871) at moorings in Sydney harbour, New South Wales. She is barque rigged with three yards on each of her fore and main masts. Fourteen cartes-de-visite of un-named men are laid out around the image of the ship with seven above, one either side and five below the image. Many of the cartes-de-visite are by Boyd's San Francisco Palace of Art at George Street, Sydney. At the bottom of the montage is the title "Orient Steam Navigation Company's S.S. "Lusitania", C.A.F. Powell Commander". C.A.F. Powell is Charles Atherton Ffolliott Powell (1845-1898) who was the ship's commander from 1878 to 1881.
