A slightly distant port near broadside view, taken from just ahead of the beam, of the 3 masted ship rigged vessel Newcastle (1859) at moorings in Gravesend Reach, River Thames. She is rigged with double topsails, single topgallants and single royals and she has painted ports. A swim headed, budget sterned, stumpy spritsail barge is alongside amidships. Tilbury Fort Watergate is in the background and the fort is being strengthened with earth embankments. There is very slight image movement of the ship.
