A starboard side view, taken from ahead of the beam, of the Anchor Line cruise ship California (1923) at anchor in an unknown location. Her port anchor is deployed and her funnel is smoking badly. Two of the ship's boats are suspended in their falls under No. 9 and No. 15 davits and another boat lies alongside the ship under the falls of No. 1 set of davits. An accommodation ladder is rigged at a midships shell door. The ship is flying the Blue Peter Code P flag meaning 'All persons should report on board as the vessel is about to proceed to sea'.
