A close detail of the port side of the commando carrier Hermes (1953) in No. 10 dry dock in the north yard of Devonport Dockyard in June 1973 towards the end of her conversion from a fixed wing aircraft carrier to a commando carrier. She recommissioned after conversion on 18 August 1973. The photographer is looking up at the stern of the ship abaft 215 station on the port side showing the safety net and jettisonable jerry can stowage at 1 (flight) deck level with the alcove for the 23 feet fast motor boat at 2 (gallery) deck level and the fairleads at 3 (hangar) deck level. Projecting from the stern at 2 (gallery) deck level is the balloon launching platform.
