A close-up view of the set of six wooden horses used for deck games on board the Cunard Line cruise ship Carinthia (1925). The numbered models have been placed side-by-side and the photographer is looking at them from dead ahead almost at deck level. An handbell is on the right of the picture. Horse races were popular events and pastimes for passengers in liners and cruise ships. These horses are for the races that were run by the throw of two dice, one dice being the number of the horse and the other being the number of moves forward it would take. Similar models but fitted with eyelets at both ends would be used where the race track was a straight run of about 10 or 15 yards on deck and the horses were reeled along on a pulley and cord system. Female passengers were recruited as jockeys for the races, at which a tote was run and bets placed on the jockeys, the winner being the jockey who could reel in her horse in the fastest time.
