Hermes (1953). On the flight (1) deck during conversion.

A 35mm roll film negative. On board the commando carrier Hermes (1953) alongside 6 and 7 wharves in the north yard of Devonport Dockyard in early July 1973 towards the end of her conversion from a fixed wing aircraft carrier to a commando carrier. She recommissioned after conversion on 18 August 1973. The photographer is on the flight (1) deck looking to starboard at the port side of the island superstructure at 89 station showing a cable reel and the open watertight door to the operations room lobby. A discarded mattress is on the deck on the right. A principal fire point is on the left under the bridge. A man is over the top of the weapons lift cover painting the side of the bridge wing from a lorry mounted Simon hydraulic platform. A large water hose is laid on the deck and various items of painters equipment is on the deck on the left.
