Hermes (1953) in the north yard at HM Dockyard, Devonport. The island from the alaskan highway on the flight (1) deck during conversion.
A 35 mm roll film negative. On board the commando carrier Hermes (1953) alongside 6 and 7 wharves in the north yard of Devonport Dockyard in early July 1973 towards the end of her conversion from a fixed wing aircraft carrier to a commando carrier. She recommissioned after conversion on 18 August 1973. The photographer is on the alaskan highway on the starboard side of the flight (1) deck at 126 station looking aft and slightly to port at the island superstructure. Two watertight doors and a telephone system with a very long cable can be seen. The Outfit ETB platform and the boat crane are in the left background. Scaffolding is against the aft end of the island and beyond it on the flight deck is the RAS (replenishment at sea) outhaul winch.
