On board the Type 12 frigate Lowestoft (1960) in No. 3 basin at Chatham Dockyard near the end of her modernisation which commenced 15 March 1968 and finished 31 May 1970. She was in the basin throughout May 1970. The photographer is in the junior rates' mess between 57 and 62½ stations on 3 deck looking aft from the middle of the port side at 58 station. A triple tier bunk unit is on the left and a double tier bunk unit is on the right. A folding table and two stacks of tubular chairs are in the centre. An electric fire, a hinged table, bookshelves, coat hooks, a towel rail and a clock reading 11.58 are against the aft bulkhead.
