On board the Type 12 frigate Lowestoft (1960) in No. 3 basin at Chatham Dockyard near the end of her modernisation which commenced 15 March 1968 and finished 31 May 1970. She was in the basin throughout May 1970. The photographer is in the junior rates' mess between 57 and 62½ stations on 3 deck looking forward from the middle of the port side at 61½ station. A triple tier bunk unit is on the right and an automatic emergency lantern is mounted on the adjacent pillar. A double tier bunk unit is on the left. Two folding tables, a bucket and a metal jug are in the centre. A litter bin, a notice board, pin-up pictures, an electric iron and coat hokks are mounted on the back of a row of kit lockers. Suitcase racks and kit lockers are in the right background.
