On board the Type 12 frigate Lowestoft (1960) in No. 3 basin at Chatham Dockyard near the end of her modernisation which commenced 15 March 1968 and finished 31 May 1970. She was in the basin throughout May 1970. The photographer is standing on the starboard side of the forecastle (1 deck) at 22 station looking forward and to port showing the replenishment at sea stores derricks and oil fuel hoses in their stowed positions. A wire reel and lockers for sea hose flexible couplings are against the aft breakwater. The 4.5 inch shell room flood and spray valves are in a locker inside the point of the breakwater. Between the forward and aft breakwaters are the hawser reel, the picking up rope reel, two other reels, the washdeck locker and the ventilation supply and exhaust heads. The 4.5 inch gun barrels are in the top of the picture.
