On board the Type 12 frigate Lowestoft (1960) in No. 3 basin at Chatham Dockyard near the end of her modernisation which commenced 15 March 1968 and finished 31 May 1970. She was in the basin throughout May 1970. The photographer is standing on the forecastle (1 deck) at 12 station looking aft showing the ventilation supply and exhaust heads and the washdeck locker between the forward and aft breakwaters. Abaft the aft breakwater are an emergency escape scuttle, the hood marked 'Open in alpha' over the 4.5 inch shell room flood and spray valves and the replenishment at sea oil fuel hoses and stores derricks in their stowed positions. The base of the 4.5 inch Mark VI gun turret is in the background with liferafts dumped on the port side of the deck.
