On board the Type 12 frigate Lowestoft (1960) in No. 3 basin at Chatham Dockyard near the end of her modernisation which commenced 15 March 1968 and finished 31 May 1970. She was in the basin throughout May 1970. The photographer is looking forward and to port from the top of the shipwright's workshop on the starboard side of 01 deck showing the emergency conning position between 46 and 47½ stations. The platform guard rails are fitted with canvas dodgers. The secondary pelorus is in the centre of the platform and an azimuth repeater is mounted on the forward rails near the starboard corner. Spare oil fuel hoses are stored on the rear of the supporting structure of the conning position. The curved top of the boiler room downtake is in the foreground.
