On board the Type 12 frigate Lowestoft (1960) in No. 3 basin at Chatham Dockyard near the end of her modernisation which commenced 15 March 1968 and finished 31 May 1970. She was in the basin throughout May 1970. The photographer is looking forward and to starboard from 46 station on the starboard side of 1 deck showing the motor whaler davits between 39 and 45 stations. A light boat hook is leaning against the ship's rail by the aft davit. The Type 14 utility frigate Exmouth (1955), pendant F84, is berthed on the north side of the basin and is serving in the 2nd Frigate Squadron. She is under the 150 ton crane and has been converted to gas turbine propulsion.
