On board the Type 12 frigate Lowestoft (1960) in No. 3 basin at Chatham Dockyard near the end of her modernisation which commenced 15 March 1968 and finished 31 May 1970. She was in the basin throughout May 1970. The photographer is looking forward and to starboard from 01 deck showing the 27 feet whaler in its davit bertween 39 and 45 stations on the starboard side of 1 deck. A crewman is washing the hull of the whaler near the forward davit. The 20 mm oerlikon gun at 38 station on 01 deck is covered and an awning has been rigged over the starboard side of 01 deck. The type 14 utility frigate Exmouth (1955), pendant F84, is berthed on the north side of the basin. She has been converted to gas turbine propulsion.
