The Type 12 frigate Lowestoft (1960) in No. 3 basin at Chatham Dockyard near the end of her modernisation which commenced 15 March 1968 and finished 31 May 1970. She was in the basin throughout May 1970. The photographer is in the hull outfit 15 compartment between 10 and 12½ stations on 4 deck looking aft on the starboard side showing the top of the sonar type 170B and the vertical guides on the right. A spare hear locker and some electrical boxes are against the starboard side on the left. The vertical ladder leading up to the sonar instrument room on 3 deck is against the aft bulkhead. On Admiralty plan number 954765/3 of 3 this compartment is shown as the sonar directing gear compartment. A vertical format negative.
