On board the Type 12 frigate Lowestoft (1960) in No. 3 basin at Chatham Dockyard near the end of her modernisation which commenced 15 March 1968 and finished 31 May 1970. She was in the basin throughout May 1970. The photographer is in the junior rates' mess between 23 and 27 stations on 3 deck looking to port from 26½ station on the starboard side showing the stairs leading up to 2 deck passageway. Kit lockers and triple tier bunk units are on the right and beyond the stairs. An automatic emergency lantern is near the top of the stairs.
