On board the Type 12 frigate Lowestoft (1960) in No. 3 basin at Chatham Dockyard near the end of her modernisation which commenced 15 March 1968 and finished 31 May 1970. She was in the basin throughout May 1970. The photographer is in the junior rates' mess between 27 and 31 stations on 3 deck looking forward and to port from the centreline at 30 station showing, on the right, the stairs up to the passageway on 2 deck. Folding tables, seven tubular chairs, kit, bread and mess lockers, two electric fires, a triple tier bunk unit, an air condition unit, a bookshelf and a clock reading 10.40.
