On board the Type 12 frigate Lowestoft (1960) in No. 3 basin at Chatham Dockyard near the end of her modernisation which commenced 15 March 1968 and finished 31 May 1970. She was in the basin throughout May 1970. The canteen between 18½ and 21 stations on the port side of 2 deck. The photographer is in the passageway looking forward and to port through the open main serving hatch showing trays of sausage rolls, chicken pies, meat patties and cream doughnuts on the counter. The canteen manager's desk with a notice board and a Thermotank air conditioning unit above it is against the forward bulkhead and a calendar displaying January 1970 is to the side of it. Shelves and cupboards against the ship's side contain sweets, sandwich spread, Oxo cubes, chocolate bars, toothpaste, tooth brushes, Dettol, talcum powder, tobacco, cigars and lighter fluid. Shelves against the forward bulkhead hold cigarettes, razor blades, pencils and coat hangers.
