His Majesty's Ship Nelson
Watercolour drawing showing the ‘Nelson’ in the centre of the image, starboard broadside view, presumably docked; three other vessels hidden behind her. In the foreground: two small boats with three passengers each; a two-masted boat with five passengers and two visible oars; three figures wearing hats sitting on rocks (except one) spectating whilst their two-masted boat is moored beside them on the right.
The ‘Nelson’ was converted to a 90 guns screw ship in 1860 and was handed over to the government of New South Wales as a training ship in 1867. This picture may show her being converted and repaired at an earlier date in Ordinary at Portsmouth; she was located there from 1814 onwards.
The only E. Burt listed in the ‘Navy List’ during the ship’s time in Britain was Edwart Burt who, from 1808 to 1858, was recorded as ‘commander’ (in 1858 on reserved half pay). After 1858 his name does not appear.
