Eyepiece mount

A sliding brass mount for an eyepiece, with rackwork and pinion.

This mount would have been attached to the side of one of William Herschel's Newtonian telescopes, with the eyepiece screwed in at right angles to the main telescope tube.

William Herschel relied on his younger brother Alexander to produce most of the fine brass work for his telescopes.
