HMS President
In this graphite drawing, the HMS President is depicted at anchor in calm waters. All of her sails are set but hang limply; they are perhaps being aired out. All of the cannons are run out, possibly to dry. A trawler is sailing in the left foreground, and to the right of the President, a small sloop is tied to the stern. A rowboat with at least one person in it can be seen In the left background. The President is anchored off of an unidentified coast; the yardarm on the hill to the right of the ship indicates the presence of a fort. The artist has signed the initials H.V. on the bottom right of the drawing.
The back of the drawing is inscribed ‘Dimensions of HMS President. Captain Jas Scott, West Indies 1835’ with the dimensions following.
