H M Sloop Grecian 16 Guns

This tinted lithograph depicts the 16-gun brig-sloop ‘Grecian’ running before the wind, possibly off the south coast of England. Steep cliffs are visible in the background, as well as several other sailing vessels, including a ship carrying full sail to her right. The fully rigged main mast and foremast would have helped to drive her swiftly through choppy water, especially when running before the wind. She derives further power from the taut jib and flying jib extending in front. This old and efficient rig was in use until sailing ships ceased to be used commercially.‘Grecian’ was launched at Pembroke Dockyard in 1838 and broken up in 1865.
