On board the Type 12 frigate HMS Berwick (1959) alongside the south wall in No.3 basin at Chatham Dockyard, near the end of her modernization which commenced 4 December 1967 and completed 4 June 1971. The photographer is in the emergency conning position between 46 and 47¾ stations on 02 deck looking to port and slightly forward showing the telephone position on the port guardrail and the rudder indicator against the forward rail. The canvas covered 25 feet motor boat is in its davits on the right. The Leander class frigate Phoebe (1964) is undergoing a maintenance period alongside the north wall of the basin. Her pendant number is F42 and she has canvas tents rigged over her foredeck and flight deck.
