The artist has situated the viewer on land, adjacent to what may be Saint Angelo Fort, which dominates the foreground on the right. Four figures appear on the rocky foreshore, apparently welcoming the ship into the harbour, while a fishing vessel and two small passenger boats appear to her stern.
