On board the Type 12 frigate HMS Berwick (1959) alongside the south wall in No.3 basin at Chatham Dockyard, near the end of her modernization which commenced 4 December 1967 and completed 4 June 1971. The photographer is looking forward from 21 station on the port side of the forecastle deck showing the two breakwaters and a number of fan exhaust units. On the right is the 4.5 inch shell room flooding cabinet. Between the breakwaters are four berthing and mooring hawser and wire cable reels and a washdeck locker. Awning stanchions are rigged. Berthed ahead of the ship are the frigate Lowestoft (1960) with the Norwegian frigate Narvik (1965) outboard of her. They are part of the Standing Naval Force Atlantic (STANAVFORLANT) on a visit.
