The Type 12 frigate HMS Berwick (1959). On the forecastle looking aft from the bow at deck level.
On board the Type 12 frigate HMS Berwick (1959) alongside the south wall in No.3 basin at Chatham Dockyard, near the end of her modernization which commenced 4 December 1967 and completed 4 June 1971. The photographer is looking aft from deck level on the centreline of the bow showing the hawse pipes, anchor cable arrangements and twin-head capstan on the forecastle deck. A cloth is laid on the deck under the starboard cables. Awning stanchions are rigged and the lower parts of the stanchions are in protective wrappings. The ship is berthed starboard side to the basin wall. The Netherlands Navy frigate Isaac Sweers (1967) is berthed alongside the west wall of 3 basin while on a vist as part of the Standing Naval Force Atlantic (STANAVFORLANT). Beyond her, berthed on the east wall of number 2 basin, is a Daring class destroyer, either Daring (1949) or Defender (1950), with her main gun director removed.
