Iroquois and Kearsage Class. Third rates.
A starboard-broadside view of the sloop-of-war USS Iroquois sailing on rough seas. The Iroquois was one of the four larger of seven screw sloops authorised by Congress in 1858. In 1862, she took part in operations in the Mississipi River during the American Civil War (Frank M Bennett, ‘The Steam Navy of the United States’, pp. 168-69, 318-19).
