HMS Mariner 1884

Original watercolour including bodycolour. Artist unknown. Starboard view of HMS Mariner (1884) moored by a coastline of low chalk cliffs with the outline of builings seen through the rigging. Three masted and originally barque-rigged she is shown here with all sails stowed and rigging clear. Mariner was fitted with a single-screw, 2 cylinder compound expansion steam engine. Her white, timber clad hull is of composite contruction with iron keel, frame and stern posts clad in timber. A blue ensign flies at the stern an a Norwegian flag from the bowsprit.
