Mr Sharp, chief of the Brig, Admiral Trowbridge: barbarously wounded, put in Irons, & Spiked to the Deck by Pirates

An illustration by William Eames from publisher Thomas Tegg's 'Accounts of Shipwrecks'. While lying off an island near Malacca in August 1807, the Admiral Trowbridge was seized by her Malay crew when her captain was ashore. They killed the second officer and 'barbarously treated' the first officer, but eventually put him ashore with five of the crew. The captain, hearing the commotion, tried to return to the vessel, but was forced back. Although searches were made the brig was never heard of again. This aquatint by William Eames shows the first officer, Mr Sharp, shackled to the deck. Two mortally wounded men are sprawled on the deck nearby while the mutinous crew takes control of the brig. Technique includes etching.
