The ships Marchioness of Ely and the General Hewitt took the 16th Lancers to India in 1822. Captain (later Lieutenant Colonel) Luard (1790-1875) embarked on the Marchioness of Ely. The two ships left together from off the Isle of Wight on 19 June. The Marchioness of Ely arrived at Calcutta on 10 November, the General Hewitt six weeks later. The journey of the Marchioness of Ely is related in three accounts: John Luard's unpublished journal; 'The Diary of an Officer of the 16th (Queen's) Lancers' by Lt Arthur Lowe, privately published in Calcutta in 1894; 'Wanderings of a Pilgrim, in search of The Picturesque, during Four-and-Twenty Years in the East with Revelations of Life in The Zenana', by Fanny Parks Parlby, Pelham Richardson, London, 1850 (reprinted by Oxford University Press in 1975).
